Underground Sun Storage 2030 - Start

Scientific monitoring and impact assessment of USS2030 use cases

In summary, WP2 addresses the opportunities and barriers of systemic integration of large-scale H2 storage into the energy system of the future. For this purpose, use cases will be developed which will be investigated in terms of their technical, economic, legal and regulatory feasibility and impacts. This will be investigated in four tasks:

Use case development incl. a socio-technical and socio-economic assessment

This task focusses on developing use cases in workshops for the integration of large scale H2-storages in the future energy system. For these use cases a qualitative assessment of existing barriers and constraints as well as opportunities for successful implementation is done. The impacts of establishing large scale storages on the overall economy (welfare effects) is done with the macro-econometrical simulation tool MOVE2.

Technical and techno-economic assessment

Technical optimization focusses on lifetime, reliability and design-to-cost. The optimization also encompasses analysis of security and failure mechanisms. This part of WP2 is done by HyCentA. This task is accompanied by an analysis of learning rates determining the future cost structure of large scale H2 storages potentially resulting in cost decreases.

Analysis of legal and regulatory aspects

Evaluation and analysis of specific future legal, political and regulatory Austrian and European frameworks which potentially affect large scale H2 storge in depleted gas fields. There will be a special focus on taxes, tariffs, funding and subventions in the future energy system, and industry application.

Scientific monitoring within the energy model region WIVA P&G.

This task is conducted by the partner WIVA P&G. A comprehensive scientific monitoring of KPIs of USS 2030 as well as strategic monitoring for scientific documentation is realized. Part of the work is the annual evaluation of scientific impact, markers and impact on industry, job creation and education, societal impact and public involvement, standards and regulations as well as policies. Based on that the KPIs for the model region and for hearing are prepared.
