Successful launch of the follow-up project EUH2STARS

01/01/2024 | Report

EUH2STARS (European Underground Hydrogen Storage Reference System), the follow-up project to USS 2030, was successfully launched at the beginning of 2024.

On January 12th, the Austrian partners of the project (RAG Austria, AG, Linz AG, AGGM, Axiom, Energieinstitut an der JKU Linz) held a press conference at the Design Center in Linz to present the Austrian part of the project.

Press release

EUH2STARS is an ambitious, industry-driven flagship project to demonstrate competitive, complete and qualified underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in depleted porous natural gas reservoirs. The consortium covers the entire hydrogen storage value chain with its complementary expertise in various disciplines and also includes key research institutions.

As project consortium leader and one of Europe’s largest natural gas storage operators, RAG Austria AG contributes the hydrogen storage facility in Rubensdorf which was developed within the USS 2030 project. RAG will operate four seasonal storage cycles at the demonstrator site in Rubensdorf by injecting pure hydrogen during summer months and withdrawing hydrogen during winter for self-supply. In this way, valuable further experience is gained for the seasonal storage of hydrogen in underground porous natural gas reservoirs.
