With “Underground Sun Storage“, the world‘s first hydrogen storage facility in an underground porous reservoir, RAG Austria AG and its project partners are setting new international standards. Two years after the start of the project, the storage facility was opened on thursday, April 27. On this occasion, various representatives of the Austrian press and politics as well as the project partners were invited to a press conference followed by a tour of the plant.
After introductory words by CEO Markus Mitteregger, the opening film and a video statement by Federal Minister Magnus Brunner were shown.
On the podium of the press conference were Thomas Stelzer (Governor, Upper Austria), Jürgen Schneider (Section Head, BMK), Andreas Reichhardt (Section Head, BMF), Bernd Vogl (Managing Director, Climate and Energy Fund), Stefan Stallinger (COO Energie AG), Franz Mittermayer (Board Director, EVN AG), Franz Helm (Verbund AG, Business Development Hydrogen) and RAG Austria CEO Markus Mitteregger.
Afterwards, the new plant was ceremonially opened in the presence of Governor Thomas Stelzer and the other guests of honor, and was subsequently inspected.
The great interest and the lively participation in the event emphasize the importance of energy storage and especially the large-volume storage of green hydrogen to enable the energy transition and to ensure a secure supply of green energy throughout the year.
